LLSS-GSA hosts Critical Lecture Series

March 12, 2014

Spring 2014 Critical Lecture Series March 12th, 4-6pm, SUB Santa Ana

“Englishes!? Is that a misspelled word?”

Dr. Bee Chamcharatsri, Assistant Professor in The Departments of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies and English

In this critical discussion topic, we will challenge the myth of the “Standard English” and will present the alternative approach to look at the role of the English language from language learning and language teaching perspectives. We will address the changing roles and status of the English language from the language of communication to the language of commodification. We will also discuss the shifting of the monolithic status of English to multiplicity of Englishes.

“’White Native English Speakers Need': The Construction of Privilege in Online English Language Teaching Recruitment Spaces”

Dr. Todd Ruecker, Assistant Professor in English
Lindsey Ives, Doctoral Student in English

The presenters will report findings from a critical discourse analysis of textual and visual features in 59 websites recruiting ESL teachers for specific language schools located in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. They conclude by providing a discussion of their findings informed by work in cultural studies and critical race theory, and suggest ways in which readers can fight against the entrenchment of native speaker and white privilege in the field of TESOL.
