Abriendo Mundos / Opening Worlds (AMOW)
Teacher Preparation Study Abroad in Córdoba, Spain

This transformative teaching apprenticeship program invites UNM students in the Secondary Education and Special Education Licensure programs to spend one month in Córdoba, Spain. Together, we practice place-based, student-centered teaching approaches through co-teaching, observing, and learning alongside local educators and COEHS faculty and through the cultural, historical richness of Andalucía.

Program Description
AMOW is a study abroad apprenticeship in partnership with the University of Córdoba, Spain. The program offers a hands-on international teaching experience for UNM Secondary and Special Education students. Participants co-teach, tutor, and observe in public secondary schools while also engaging in cultural immersion and academic coursework.
What the Program Covers
- Hands-on teaching experience in Spanish schools
- Evening academic course with UNM faculty
- Cultural excursions throughout Andalucía
- Support from faculty to lead pedagogical workshops with practicing and pre-professional educators
- Interdisciplinary, place-based, arts-integrated learning
- Mentorship by faculty in both Spain and UNM
Eligibility
Open to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Education and Human Sciences’ Secondary and Special Education Licensure Program. Bilingual and first-generation college students are strongly encouraged to apply.
How to Apply
Applications open October 15 and close January 15 of each year. Interested students should visit the UNM VIA-TRM platform and search for AMOW (Abriendo Mundos/Opening Worlds). Students will be notified of acceptance by February 15.
