Reserve Space in Travelstead Hall

Travelstead Open Space/Lobby Guidelines / Agreements

Travelstead Hall, Building 65, was built on the UNM campus in 1956. It originally housed the College of Education Dean and administration, and a curriculum library.

Currently, Travelstead Hall houses offices that support undergraduate advisement, undergraduate admissions, degree certification, field services, student success, communication and outreach, and recruitment and retention.

Travelstead has served the UNM community since its inception and currently has its large open space used for various public and private events. Due to the large number of requests to utilize this space, the following guidelines have been drafted.

  1. The primary function of Travelstead Hall is to house staff and others who provide direct support to students. The offices maintain the following schedule for Fall and Spring semesters (changes occur for Summer and Winter sessions):

    Mondays – Thursdays (8am-5pm)
    Fridays (8am-5pm)

The staff adheres to the UNM administrative calendar. When classes are not in session, UNM remains open, staff occupies Travelstead Hall and continues to work with students in person, via Zoom, and by phone.

Due to Travelstead's open space, we request that those reserving space understand that sound carries through the building. If there are noise concerns, they are to be brought to the Director of Student Success attention before the scheduled event.
  2. The advisement area is FERPA protected. The requestor understands that the rope barriers in place on the west side of the platform protect the student and staff's privacy. At no time is anyone allowed in this space unless they are College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) faculty or staff. There is rope barrier at the west entrance stairs to the platform that serves this purpose. Anyone outside of COEHS faculty and staff must walk along the side (inside the building) and check in with the front desk.
  3. The front desk area MUST remain clear to allow students with scheduled appointments to check in or any advisement questions to be taken care of by the front desk staff. Travelstead staff requests that there is no congregation at the front desk.
  4. If approved events are held during traditional advisement hours, a couch or two will be moved to the advisement area for students to wait for advisement. At no time is anyone allowed to congregate in the space provided for the day-to-day work of those in Travelstead Hall.
  5. The elevator is in place ONLY for ADA access by individuals. At no time is the elevator to be used for freight or other purposes, including food deliveries or packages.
  6. The requestor must provide a UNM index number for the following reasons –
    1. Travelstead Hall has weekly visits from UNM custodial but they cannot pick up additional trash bags outside of the bins Travelstead was provided. Any additional trash pick up must be requested by the Travelstead Building Manager and an index number must be provided for any associated charges.
    2. For events that have food may require vacuuming. If additional requests are sent to custodial the Building Manager of Travelstead Hall must also provide an index number for any associated charges. This includes any spills and staining.
  7. Travelstead Hall has LIMITED tables and chairs that can be used by those reserving the space. The requestor understands it is their responsibility to come an hour or so before the scheduled event to move tables and chairs to their liking. If available, Travelstead Hall’s front desk staff may assist, but this is not always available or guaranteed.
  8. Travelstead Hall is locked at 5:00PM every day. If there are events approved and scheduled outside of this time frame, the Building Manager will send confirmation of scheduled event to UNM Police Department to note there will be an event taking place in Travelstead Hall and what time the building should be locked up by security. NOTE: the only doors that will remain open during the scheduled event will be the main breezeway doors.
  9. Any requested changes or updates must be submitted and reviewed by the Director of Student Success, Natalie C. Arellanez (coehsco@unm.edu)

IMPORTANT: During key registration periods and student-focused events, reservations may not be possible and declined.
