My name is Gbenga Olorunsiwa. I earned my bachelor’s degree in English, my master’s degree in African American studies, and my PhD in American Studies here at UNM. My education in the Humanities field has allowed me to learn effective communication skills, leadership abilities, teamwork, adaptability, time management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
My interest in academic advisement is born out of my dedication to students’ growth and success. I am passionate about academic advisement because it is crucial for student success. Not only am I dedicated to helping students navigate the University system, and all the numerous resources available to them here at UNM, but I am also committed to helping students identify their strengths, clarify their academic goals, and stay on track for timely graduation.
As an academic advisor, the supportive framework I bring and my positive mindsets and energy will help enhance student’s personal growth, aids in their career preparation, and provides guidance to students for degree planning, ensuring all students have the tools and supports needed to overcome challenges and thrive in their academic journey here at UNM. As an academic advisor, I am very big on holistic advising approach because it offers a comprehensive approach to supporting student's overall well-being and accomplishment, while appreciating that students’ academic journey and experience here at UNM is interconnected with their socio-economic, personal, emotional, and even financial backgrounds.
