John Barnes, Ph.D.

Dr. John Barnes is a professor emeritus in the sport administration program at the University of New Mexico. Within the program, Dr. Barnes taught graduate-level courses in sport finance, leadership, governance of intercollegiate athletics, and organizational theory.
Prior to entering sport management education, Dr. Barnes worked as an NATA certified athletic trainer. In that capacity he worked for three years with the California (now Los Angeles) Angels, one year with the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals), and for ten years was the head athletic trainer at Chaffey Community College in southern California. In 2010, he was inducted into the Chaffey College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Dr. Barnes has authored or co-authored two dozen articles in peer-review journals and a half dozen more articles in the popular press. His book, entitled Same Players, Different Game: An Examination of the Commercial College Athletics Industry was published in March, 2020 by UNM Press.
Dr. Barnes is a Fulbright Scholar, having taught and conducted research at the Hungarian University of Sport Sciences.
Dr. Barnes holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; a Master of Science degree in kinesiology from University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and a PhD in sports administration from the University of New Mexico.
