Undegraduate Minor in Bilingual Education (BilEd)
The Department of Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies (LLSS) offers coursework that applies for the Bilingual Education endorsement (granted by the NMPED) and an undergraduate Minor in Bilingual Education (awarded by UNM). The Bilingual Education minor is designed to help pre-service teachers gain a Bilingual Ed. endorsement as part of their undergraduate teacher licensure program. By successfully completing the curriculum listed below, students are able to have a Bilingual endorsement attached to their teaching license through the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED).
Minor Requirements
Complete all of the following
- LLSS 300 - Bilingual Teaching Methods, Materials and Techniques (3)
- LLSS 453 - Theoretical and Cultural Foundations of Bilingual Education (3)
- LLSS 455 - Teaching Spanish for Bilingual Classroom (3)
- LLSS 456 - First and Second Language Development within Cultural Contexts (3)
- LLSS 479 - The Teaching of Reading in the Bilingual Classroom (3)
- LLSS 482 - Teaching English as a Second Language (3)
Grand Total Credits: 18
In addition to the above courses, the courses below are also required by the NMPED for an endorsement in Bilingual Education (Spanish and English)
Corequisites Linguistics (3 credits):
- LING 2110 - Introduction to the Study of Language and Linguistics or any other Introductory Linguistics course
Language (6 credits):
- SPAN 301 - Topics in Hispanic Culture and Language
- SPAN 302 - Developing Spanish Writing Skills
Sociocultural/History/Arts: (3 credit hours, select one from below)
- LLSS 449—Teaching the Native Language to Native Speaker
- LLSS 460—Language and Education in Southwest Native American Communities
- LLSS 457—Language, Culture, and Mathematics (taught in Spanish only during Summer)
- CCS or CCST—Any Chicano Studies course in consult with an advisor
- SPAN 307—Introduction to Hispanic Literature
- SPAN 371—Spanish of the Southwest
- SPAN 375—Southwestern Hispanic Folklore
Application
Students must complete and submit an application for the Bilingual Education minor and have it be reviewed by the departmental Bilingual/TESOL program faculty. Depending on their language proficiency, students may also have to take additional language courses. The coursework for the endorsements supports bilingual teacher candidates to strengthen their understanding of bilingual and biliteracy development, teaching practices, and professional identities regarding the education of bilingual (Spanish and English) students.
In addition to the courses listed below, students must also pass the test Prueba for bilingual Certification (Prueba de Español para la Certificación Bilingüe). Prueba is an instrument designed to assess the Spanish language proficiency of prospective bilingual education teachers in New Mexico.
