Supporting Graduate Student Success
Connection • Support • Opportunity
Being a graduate student at UNM's College of Education & Human Sciences is about more than just attending classes. We believe that the quality of one's graduate school experience is greatly impacted by the support and opportunities for academic and professional success that lie outside of the classroom. With this in mind, we offer a variety of services, resources, and opportunities to our graduate students.
Graduate Student Associations
The Graduate Student Associations (GSAs) offer students the opportunity to develop a sense of community with their peers through monthly meetings, social events, and opportunities that support graduate student academic and professional growth. The GSAs, which are chartered groups within specific programs and/or departments, receive funding from the UNM's Graduate Student & Professional Association. For more information about the GSA in particular COEHS departments, visit the COEHS Student Organizations page on this website.
Opportunities to Conduct Research with Faculty
Opportunities to conduct research with faculty are available through research assistantships and through independent courses (e.g., research internship, problems courses, etc.) with individual faculty. Generally these become available after a student has been here for more than one semester. More information is available from your academic advisor and faculty whose research is of interest to you.
Research Methodology Coursework
The COEHS offers a wide array of coursework in research methodologies from a variety of research traditions. The current three-year schedule of coursework is available. This schedule is tentative and is for planning purposes only. When particular courses are offered could change based on instructor availability, section enrollment, and other factors. This schedule is the faculty’s intention to offer courses and is not a guarantee. Consult the official schedule for a particular semester via schedule.unm.edu.
Support for Teaching Assistants
Teaching Assistants (TA's) in the College are supported, not only by faculty in their department, but also by an orientation that addresses many teaching topics and issues. Additionally, TA's have access to the COEHS Instructor's Handbook. Finally, TA's are supported through TARC (Teaching Assistant Resource Center), a program that offers a variety of resources and training.
Graduate Student Listserv
COEHS graduate students are kept informed on a number of pertinent topics via our graduate student listserv. Emails are sent out on the listserv to inform students of available funding, conferences, employment opportunities, social events, dissertation hearings, and the like. When you become a student you will receive your UNM net id, which automatically puts your name on the COEHS listserv.
Technology Education Center (TEC)
The Technology Education Center (TEC) of the College of Education is in a building connected to Travelstead Hall. It was established to facilitate the integration of computer technologies into educators' instructional activities. The TEC provides computer facilities and services to students, faculty, and staff of the College of Education & Human Sciences, as well as associated educational communities.
Office of Graduate Studies (OGS)
UNM's Office of Graduate Studies, located in Dane Smith Hall (Room 220), provides a number of grants, scholarships, and fellowships, as well as a variety of services and information for graduate students.
Office of International Programs & Studies (OIPS)
