Endorsement Coursework in Bilingual Education (BilEd)

Bilingual Education Endorsement Coursework

The Department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies (LLSS) is the academic and conceptual home of the endorsement coursework in Bilingual Education at UNM. Our commitment is to provide high-quality academic preparation for teachers in the areas of language and culture in order to meet the educational needs of the state, the nation, and the world. Our endorsement coursework is structured to contribute to the quality of life in New Mexico through contributions to public policy, support for emergent bilinguals, second language learners, language preservation programs, and advocacy for social justice.

The Bilingual Education endorsement coursework enable teacher candidates at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to strengthen their understandings, teaching practices, and professional identities regarding the education of bilingual students and students who are learning English as a second language.

Endorsements are issued by the New Mexico Public Education Department to K-12 teachers licensed in general and special education. The following information pertains to the endorsement coursework in Bilingual Education in the Department of LLSS. For licensure programs, see other departments in the College of Education & Human Sciences.

Process to Register into the Endorsement Coursework

This endorsement coursework does not require admission into the College of Education and Human Sciences or enrollment in a degree-seeking program in LLSS. UNM students can register into any of the courses listed for the endorsement coursework. Some courses may have restrictions, please contact Cecilia Estrada at llssws@unm.edu to lift the restrictions.

Non-UNM students need to apply for a non-degree student (graduate or undergraduate) status to be able to register into the courses in the endorsement coursework. To apply for the non-degree status, please visit this website: https://www.unm.edu/apply/ . Follow steps to apply as a non-degree student on the Albuquerque Campus. Endorsement Coursework in Bilingual Education

The following courses have been approved by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) for the Bilingual Education teaching endorsement. Please note that the endorsement is issued by the New Mexico Public Education Department (not UNM). Substitutions for any of these courses must be approved by NMPED. School districts have set a priority on hiring teachers who have successfully completed endorsement coursework versus alternative routes to endorsements. There is a great shortage of bilingually-endorsed teachers, therefore teachers with a bilingual endorsement are in especially high demand.
