The Spring 2020 Summit has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

In hopes that we are able, there are plans to reschedule the summit for late summer or early fall. Updates will be posted on this webpage as they become available.

Community Conversations Summit: Building Education Partnerships

The University of New Mexico College of Education (COE), in cooperation with Albuquerque Public Schools and Los Lunas Schools, will convene a summit, Community Conversations: Building Education Partnerships, for education stakeholders in New Mexico, on Monday, April 13, 2020 at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center in Albuquerque.  Community Conversations Summit will focus on teacher preparation, recruitment and retention in the context of current challenges, trends and legal mandates in New Mexico public education. Breakout sessions may include discussions of the following topics:  Grow Your Own Teacher and Teacher Preparation Affordability scholarships, Educators Rising, legislative updates, Yazzie/Martinez decision, and social and emotional learning of students and staff.

Registration has been disabled and will reopen when the summit is rescheduled.

Community Conversations is the product of an earlier summit held in September 2019. At the prior summit, the COE brought together New Mexico school districts, State of New Mexico legislative staff, representatives of the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) and the New Mexico Higher Education Department (HED), and UNM COE faculty and staff to discuss new scholarship funding appropriated by the New Mexico State Legislature to recruit, retain and support students to become teachers. Presentations and discussions last fall signaled a need and desire to continue the conversations and forge partnerships among the stakeholders to meet the challenges facing education in New Mexico. Participants requested subsequent summits to connect with other stakeholders around education issues in New Mexico.
