Education Specialist Graduate Certificate in Special Education

The Education Specialist Certificate in Special Education (Ed.S.) certificate program is specially designed to provide an opportunity for advanced study of the principles, theories, and practices in special education. Applicants who already have obtained a master’s degree in special education may be considered to pursue this advanced certificate. The Ed.S. may be appropriate for individuals who intend to engage in providing direct support to individuals, coordinate or supervise programs, or provide in-service or pre-service specialized training.

Program Information

Admission to the Ed.S. program

The application can be found at www.unm.edu/apply. The online application will provide instruction on which documents need to be uploaded and which need to be sent to the Office of Admissions. The following documents are needed to apply:

  1. Complete Graduate Application online
  2. A non-refundable application fee (pay with credit card online as part of Graduate Application)
  3. One official transcript from each college attended sent to UNM Office of Admissions
  4. One unofficial transcript from each college attended attached to the online application
  5. Department Application form for the EdS program (link provided in the online application)
  6. Letter of Intent stating your reasons for applying to the Program, a description of relevant experience, and your education/career goals
  7. A sample of professional writing (this may be a term paper, published article, thesis, or any other professional document) that demonstrates your ability to write well
  8. Professional vita (resume)
  9. Five (5) letters of recommendation from instructors, employers, or professional references.
