Ann Gibson received her PhD at UNM with a concentration in Exercise Science in 2000; she was the last doctoral student that Vivian Heyward mentored. Her first academic appointment was at the University of Akron (Ohio), followed by 8 years at Barry University in Miami Shores (Florida). Elated to have the opportunity to return to her alma mater, Dr. Gibson accepted a tenure-track faculty position at UNM in 2009. Her primary line of research is related to body composition assessment methods and models, but she is equally fond of investigating physiological responses to exercise and blending applied and bench science. These interest areas encompass her lifelong interests in science, sports, and medicine and have generated numerous publications and presentations with student and faculty co-authors.
She has been successful in being awarded external grants and fee-for-service contracts from the likes of the National Science Foundation, private sector businesses, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association in addition to internal grant awards from both Main and North Campus funders at the University of New Mexico. Her international speaking invitations have taken her to Mexico City, Seoul, and Gdansk (Poland).
In addition to holding membership in multiple organizations related to the eclectic field of exercise science, Dr. Gibson has been awarded Fellow status with the American College of Sports Medicine; is now the SW regional chapter of ACSM’s (SWACSM’s) representative to the national ACSM organization; has served as President-Elect, President, and Past-President of SWACSM; and is lead author of the 8th edition of the world renowned textbook Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription.
