Article by COEHS Professor and Public School Teachers Wins National Award

Dr. Katherine Crawford-Garrett and five public school teachers in New Mexico, including Amanda Short, Kahlil Simpson, Damon Carbajal, Eleanor Deck-Stevens and Emilia Meyer won the Outstanding Article Award from the Association of Teacher Educators.

The article titled "Teaching Out Loud: Critical Literacy, Intergenerational Professional Development, and Educational Transformation in a Teacher Inquiry Community" documents the work of Teaching Out Loud, a teacher research community that Dr. Crawford-Garrett co-facilitates with the teachers. As part of the group teachers have investigated using PhotoVoice in a Kindergarten setting, implementing Literature Circles in a bilingual classroom, using poetry to valued the lived identities of middle school students and teaching theater as a way to foreground trauma with high school students. The group is currently pursuing a book project with Teacher's College Press.
